Graphic design:
Graphic design is a form of communicating visually using
text and/or images to present information, or promote
a message. The art of graphic design embraces a range
of cognitive skills and crafts including typography,
image development and page layout. Graphic design is
applied in communication design and fine art. Like other
forms of communication, graphic design often refers
to both the process (designing) by which the communication
is created, and the products (designs) such as creative
solutions, imagery and multimedia compositions. Graphic
design is traditionally applied to static media, such
as books, magazines and brochures. Additionally, since
the advent of computers, graphic design is utilized
in electronic media - often referred to as interactive
design, or multimedia design.
There are varying degrees of graphic design. Graphic
designer involvement may range from verbally communicated
ideas, to visual rough drafts, to final production.
In commercial art, client edits, technical preparation
and mass production are usually required, but usually
not considered to be within the scope of graphic design
unless the client is also a graphic designer.

Game design :

Game design is the process of designing the content
and rules of a game. The term is also used to describe
both the game design embodied in an actual game as well
as documentation that describes such a design. All the
above have design elements to them and this makes a
clear and concise definition of video game design difficult.
The complex nature of video game development arises
because of interdependencies between these design disciplines.
Decisions made in one area tend to create constraints
in others. For example, art specifications can conflict
with techincal constraints, or the design might appear
coherent overall, but impractical to build.
These interdependencies, although typically less
complex, are also applicable to more traditional game
design, such as board games, where the designer might
seek to make the game fun, but may also wish to make
sure that it is possible to mass produce, market and
sell it and turn a profit.

Fashion design:

Fashion design is the applied art dedicated to the design
of clothing and lifestyle accessories created within
the cultural and social influences of a specific time.
Fashion design differs from costume design due to
its core product having a built in obsolescence usually
of one to two seasons. A season is defined as either
autumn/winter or spring/summer. Fashion design is
generally considered to have started in the 19th century
with Charles Frederick Worth who was the first person
to sew their label into the garments that they created.
While all articles of clothing from any time period
are studied by academics as costume design, only clothing
created after 1858 could be considered as fashion
design. Fashion designers design clothing and accessories.
Some high-fashion designers are self-employed and
design for individual clients. Other high-fashion
designers cater to specialty stores or high-fashion
department stores. These designers create original
garments, as well as those that follow established
fashion trends. Most fashion designers, however, work
for apparel manufacturers, creating designs of men’s,
women’s, and children’s fashions for the
mass market. Designer brands which have a 'name' as
their brand such as Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren are
likely to be designed by a team of individual designers
under the direction a designer director.

Design engineer:

A Design Engineer is a general term that covers multiple
engineering disciplines - Electrical, Mechanical and
Civil Engineering are the basic three. The Design Engineer
is responsible for the design and development of new
products, equipment or facilities.
The Design Engineer is distinguished from the designer
/ drafter by virtue of the fact that a Design Engineer
sets the direction of the design effort. The Designer/Drafter
is usually directed by the Design Engineer. The Design
Engineer usually leads the project. He/she works with
Industrial designers and Marketing to develop the
product concept and specifications. He/she then directs
the design effort from that point. Products are usually
designed with input from a number of sources. The
Design Engineer may direct a team of designers to
create the CAD files necessary for prototype and production.
However, with the advent of solid modeling software
the Design Engineer may create the files his or herself.

Interior design:

Interior design is the process of shaping the experience
of interior space, through the manipulation of spatial
volume as well as surface treatment. Not to be confused
with interior decoration, interior design draws on aspects
of environmental psychology, architecture, product design
and furniture design in addition to traditional decoration.
An interior designer is a person who is considered a
professional in the field of interior design or one
who designs interiors as part of their job. Interior
design is a creative practice that analyzes programmatic
information, establishes a conceptual direction, refines
the design direction, and produces graphic communication
and construction documents. In some jurisdictions, interior
designers must be licensed to practice.
Interior designers can specialize in a particular
interior design discipline, such as residential and
commercial design, with some developing expertise
within a niche design area such as hospitality, health
care and institutional design. Some jurisdictions
may require interior designers who specialize in certain
design disciplines to acquire additional certification.
For example, residential designers in the United States
who are specialists in kitchen and bath design may
be required to take the National Kitchen & Bath
Association examination to receive certification in
this design area. Interior designers who also possess
environmental expertise in design solutions for sustainable
construction can receive accreditation in this area
by taking the Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) examination.

Automotive design:

Automotive design is the profession involved in the
development of motor vehicles or more specifically road
vehicles. This most commonly refers to automobiles but
also refers to motorcycles, trucks, buses, coaches,
and vans. The design and development of a modern motor
vehicle is typically done by a large team from many
different disciplines. Automotive design in this context
is primarily concerned with developing the visual appearance
or aesthetics of the vehicle, though it is also involved
in the creation of the product concept. Automotive design
is practiced by designers who usually have an art background
and a degree in industrial design or transport design. |

Instructional design:

Instructional design, and the more holistically-based
practice Instructional Systems Design, are technologies
of education and instruction. The term technology is
being used in the sense of an applied science. Instructional
Design and Instructional Systems Design are scientifically
derived processes which are intended to optimize learning
gains in knowledge and performance from precisely engineered
(and designed) instruction. It is a common misunderstanding
that Instructional Designers use physical technology
as a method for developing instruction. From a narrow
definition of the term 'technology' this may be true.
But Instructional Designers will tend to prefer to use
the term 'media', instead of technology, when referring
to the instructional delivery vehicles that they employ
As a field, Instructional Design is historically
and traditionally rooted in cognitive and behavioural
psychology. However, because it is not a regulated
field, and therefore not well understood, the term
'instructional design' has been co-opted by or confused
with a variety of other ideologically-based and /
or professional fields. Instructional Design, for
example, is not Graphic Design although graphic design
(from a cognitive perspective) could play an important
role in Instructional Design. Preparing instructional
text by E. Misanchuk, and publications by James Hartley
are useful to informing the distinction between Instructional
Design and Graphic Design.

Product Design:

Product Design can be defined as the idea generation,
concept development, testing and manufacturing or
implementation of a physical object or service. It
covers more that the discipline name - Industrial
Design. Product Designers conceptualise and evaluate
ideas, making them tangible through products in a
more systematic approach. The role of a product designer
encompasses many characteristics of the marketing
manager, Product management, industrial designer and
design engineer. The title name of Industrial designer
has in many cases fallen into the category of an art.
The role of product designer combines art, science
and commerce for tangible non-perishable items. This
evolving role has been facilited by digital tools
that allow designers to communicate, visualize and
analyze ideas in a way that would have taken greater
manpower in the past.

Sound design:

Sound design is a technical/conceptually creative
field. It covers all non-compositional elements of
a film, a play, a music performance or recording,
computer game software or any other multimedia project.
A person who practices the art of sound design is
known as a Sound Designer. The Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences recognizes the finest or most aesthetic
sound mixing or recording with the Academy Award for
Best Sound.

Film: |
|

The terms "Sound Design" and "Sound Designer"
were already in use in theatre and were introduced to
the film world when Francis Ford Coppola directed a
live production of Noel Coward's Private Lives at the
American Conservatory Theatre (ACT) in San Francisco
where sound designer Charlie Richmond was resident,
while the final cut of the The Godfather was being edited
in 1972. In the original film world meaning of the title,
as established in the 1970s by Coppola and Walter Murch,
a sound designer is an individual ultimately responsible
for all aspects of a film's audio track, from the dialogue
and sound effects recording to the re-recording of the
final track. The title was first granted by Coppola
to Murch for his work on the film Apocalypse Now, in
recognition for his extraordinary contribution to that
film; in this way the position emerged in the same way
the title of production designer came in to being in
the 1930's, when William Cameron Menzies made revolutionary
contributions to the craft of art direction in the making
of Gone with the Wind.

Theatre: |
|

Sound design is one of the youngest fields in technical
theatre, second only to the use of projection and other
multimedia displays. The idea of sound design has been
around since theatre started, however the first person
to receive a credit as Sound Designer on the poster
and in the programme alongside the lighting and scene
designers was David Collison for the 59 Theatre Company
Season at London's Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith in 1959.
The first person to be titled the "sound designer"
on Broadway was Jack Mann for his work on Show Girl
in 1963, and for regional theatre to Dan Dugan at the
American Conservatory Theatre, San Francisco in the
late 1960s. Since then the field has been growing rapidly.
The term "Sound Design" was introduced to
the film world when Francis Ford Coppola directed a
production of Private Lives at ACT, while the final
cut of the film The Godfather was being edited in 1972.

Costume design:

Costume design is the design of the appearance of
the characters in a theater or cinema performance.
This usually involves designing or choosing clothing,
footwear, hats and head dresses for the actors to
wear, but it may also include designing masks, makeup
or other unusual forms, such as the full body animal
suits worn in the musical Cats. The Costume designer
is the person whose responsibility is to design costumes
for a film or stage production. He or she is considered
part of the "production team," alongside
the director, scenic and lighting designers. The costume
designer might also collaborate with a hair/wig master
or a makeup designer, with the latter two operating
on a subordinate level. In European theatre the role
is somewhat different as the theatre designer will
design both costume and scenic elements.
Costume designers will typically seek to enhance
a character's persona, within the framework of the
director's vision, through the way that character
is dressed. At the same time, the designer must ensure
that the designs allow the actor to move in a manner
consistent with the historical period and enables
the actor to execute the director's blocking of the
production without damage to the garments. Additional
considerations include the durability and washability
of garments, particularly in extended runs. The designer
must work in consultation with not only the director,
but the set and lighting designers to ensure that
the overall design of the production works together.
The designer needs to possess strong artistic capabilities
as well as a thorough knowledge of pattern development,
draping, drafting, textiles and costume/fashion history.
